When I make candles, I try to choose the right size wick for the candle. But tunneling like the first photo happens often if the candles are not allowed to burn for 2 to 3 hours at a time.

...And wait for a whie. Check occasionally whether the tunnel is fixed. How long it takes depends on the candle, so be patient and check often.
Also observe height of the flame; if the wax gets too deep, the flame becomes too small to provide enough heat. If this happens, remove some of the melted wax.
